Scam alert: Unauthorised sellers impersonating AFAC staff

We are aware of scammers impersonating AFAC employees, including using the names 'Thomas Clement' and 'Oliver Smith' with the title 'Senior Volunteer Coordinator' to advertise so-called 'AFAC-backed' shipping containers.

Last updated15 Sept 2025

AFAC does not sell or supply shipping containers. Any offer claiming otherwise is fraudulent.

In recent months, we’ve received enquiries from members and the public about these false listings and messages.

We are taking this very seriously and have reported the activity to Facebook and Scamwatch.
Be cautious of communications that:

  • appear to come from AFAC but use non-AFAC email addresses such as:
  • use WhatsApp numbers or Facebook Marketplace accounts instead of official AFAC channels
  • pressure you to act quickly or pay a deposit to ‘secure’ a container
  • request payment via bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or other non-traceable methods
  • contain spelling/grammar errors or unusual phrasing
  • use titles such as ‘Senior Volunteer Coordinator’ in ways that don’t match official AFAC channels.

All official AFAC emails end with @afac.com.au. We do not use Gmail, Outlook, or other domains, and we do not sell goods or request payments via WhatsApp, Facebook, or Marketplace.

If you have any concerns regarding any suspicious communications from any source representing themselves as AFAC, please verify their legitimacy by contacting AFAC directly at reception@afac.com.au.

If you have already made a payment or shared personal information, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to Scamwatch and your local police.

We recommend caution when encountering unsolicited offers online. Please help us spread the word and prevent further harm.
