Large Animal Rescue Operations
June 9, 2022, by AFAC Rescue Technical Group and AFAC Urban Operations Group | v1.0 The purpose of this guideline is to provide an overview of the procedures, techniques, equipment and training considerations for large animal rescue operations for fire and emergency agencies in both Australia and New Zealand.
Our guideline
(see full document attached below)
This guideline details the overarching operational and best practice that member agencies should consider when planning and responding to incidents involving large animals. A large animal refers to land-based domestic animals; including horses and cattle; and may cover animals such as alpacas/llamas, sheep, goats and pigs. As a general rule, the term ‘large’ is applied to an animal requiring two or more people to move.
This guideline does not cover small companion animals, such as cats and dogs or native wildlife. The diagrams included in this guideline illustrate horses, however, the similar techniques can be used in rescue operations for other large animals.
This guideline does not replace formal training in large animal rescue operations.
