Overview
This learner resource covers the skills, knowledge and behaviours that contribute to working effectively as a team member. Suggested learning activities are included throughout the learner resource and a series of self-assessment questions are provided at the end of each section to assist you to monitor your progress and to support your learning process.

Target audience
The target audience for this training is personnel working in public safety and is particularly pertinent to new staff in assisting with integration into the team culture of the organisation.

Course content
This learner resource is divided into three sections:

  • Section 1 examines how the members of a team develop an understanding of one another that enables them to work together more effectively. Teams tend to progress through several stages that help members develop into a cohesive unit that can effectively coordinate their activities.
  • Section 2 provides an overview of the key factors which determine the effectiveness of a
    team and its members. The importance of planning and monitoring team tasks, member roles and responsibilities and providing and receiving feedback are discussed.
  • Section 3 discusses interpersonal skills and team communication and describes how these can influence the way a team works together.

On completion of PUATEA001, participants should be able to:

  • describe the characteristics which define a work group as a team
  • explain the four stages of team development
  • list the characteristics of effective team members
  • communicate effectively as a team member
  • participate and contribute as a team member to team performance.
